Case Wagenvoord so describes his proposal of an amendment to the U.S. constitution that could lead to the passage of desperately-needed campaign finance reform. Though the legislative and executive branches might conceivably pass legislation to control corporate contributions to political campaigns, under the Constitution as it has currently been interpreted, the corporations can sue to invalidate measures that violate their "free speech" rights as persons to spend their money as they see fit. The amendment that Wagemvoord advocates would strip corporations of this legal construction of their "personhood," giving them no such standing in the courts. Admitting a snow-balls-chance-in-hell of passing such an amendment, he cites I.F. Stone's dictum that the only fights worth fighting are those one is likely to lose, as a string of losses may be the only political path to an ultimate victory.
